Assistant Professor of Fashion Design and Justice (2 positions) Renewable Term/Tenure-Track Appointment School of Fashion Parsons School of Design Start date: July 1, 2024 Parsons School of Design, a college of The New School, acknowledges the ancestral and traditional territories of The Lenape People on which our faculty, staff, and students work, learn, and create. Parsons School of Design, a college of The New School, invites candidates for Assistant Professor of Fashion Design and Justice, a renewable term or tenure-track appointment in the School of Fashion beginning July 1, 2024.
We seek candidates whose approach to fashion design considers approaches to embodiment, gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, age, size and/or climate justice in order to develop expansive, inclusive and sustainable narratives, frameworks and terminologies through fashion. We are interested in applicants with experience in one (or more) of the following areas:
Fashion Product (Jewelry and Accessories)
- Research, design iteration and critical approaches to making
- Applied knowledge of sustainable materials for fashion products
- Creative approaches to prototyping techniques towards the development of form, sculpture and shape
- Awareness and application of technological innovations
Fashion Design (2D Design and 3D Creative Makers 3D Creative)
- Knowledge of critical and experimental design processes
- Ability to connect theory and practice
- Use of design research methodologies and the ability to translate into design ideas
- Applied techniques and multi-method approaches to 2D and 3D realization within physical (material) and digital interfaces; and/or
- Creative and alternative 3D approaches (such as zero-waste, creative pattern cutting, draping, prototyping)
Digital Fashion Design
- Navigate between and interface with 2D, 3D and 4D processes
- Use of digital strategies and tools to generate fashion outcomes that exist in both digital and physical spaces;
- Advanced knowledge of Clo3D, 3D virtual spaces, and/or animation
- Knowledge of gaming, the metaverse, and/or digital inclusion through modes of AR/VR and/or by using programs such as Style3D and Blender

RESPONSIBILITIES The work of this faculty member is divided between (1) teaching, (2) scholarship or professional/creative practice, and (3) university service. The standard teaching load is five coursesor the equivalentper academic year. Within their field of expertise, the faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate, including First Year, as well as graduate courses, to majors and non-majors. They will hold regular office hours, and participate in extracurricular teaching activities such as critiques, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, and advising. University service includes program, Parsons, and New School assignments on committees and task forces, and as program directors or associate directors with a reduced teaching load in graduate and undergraduate programs, including the undergraduate First Year. All faculty are expected to be engaged with scholarship or professional/creative practice at a level commensurate with their faculty rank.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - A graduate degree in fashion design or related design field, or equivalent professional experience (such as experiences in the fashion industry, fashion entrepreneurship and/or community work).
- Active/current professional practice or creative/critical scholarship that demonstrates significant creative and professional achievement in fashion product, fashion design and 3D creative, and/or digital fashion design at the intersection of social and/or climate justice.
- Two years teaching at college, university, community-based, and/or secondary education level with evidence of engagement with course and syllabus development/planning.
- Strong interest in working collaboratively across Parsons and the University.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as a collaborator or lead.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.
- Evidence of a commitment to educational equity in teaching, research, scholarship, professional/creative practice, or other experience.
- Evidence of cross-cultural communication skills in teaching, research, scholarship, professional/creative practice, or other experience.
- Evidence of demonstrated interest in / building the ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds, to develop and nurture the individual student's abilities, and a strong commitment to progressive education. This evidence can be in a candidate's teaching, research, scholarship, professional/creative practice, or other experience.
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity and inclusion (in classroom, campus, community) in teaching, research, scholarship, professional/creative practice, or other experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Practice and approach to fashion design includes interdisciplinary engagement and/or collaboration.
- Experience in higher education academic setting, with a working knowledge of curriculum development, student support, and management.
- Experience teaching English language learners, students from low income backgrounds, and first generation college students.
- University-level teaching that includes a combination of studios, seminars, and tutorials, at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Experience with/commitment to curricular and community-building work for first-year college students; capacity to lead in the context of a first-year studies program.

SALARY RANGE Assistant Professor: $75,000 - $90,000 per annum
