THE OPPORTUNITY

As an experienced Distribution Line Engineer or Designer, you will be responsible for completing distribution designs, specifications, estimates and drawings for various distribution line design projects adhering to the project criteria and budget provided along with applicable industry and client standards. Utilizing our industry-leading ISO 9001 quality management system, BHMG consistently delivers a premium product that exceeds clients’ expectations. You will apply a hands-on approach to each project and focus on continually improving processes after each project’s completion. The ideal candidate should have experience in drafting software and have proven expertise in power systems and the design of electrical distribution lines.

Who You Will Work With

The Distribution Engineer/Designer is a valuable member of our Line team who will work under the guidance of a Project Engineer and closely with their design team members. You may mentor new engineers and designers.

Where and How You Will Work

BHMG employees work a weekly hybrid schedule with a mix of in-office time and work-from-home flexibility. For the first 30 days, the new employee will be required to be in-office for training and onboarding. For this role, you’ll work at our St. Louis office. BHMG employees also have the flexibility to choose flexible schedules while being accountable during core hours. This is a full-time position.

What You Will Do (key responsibilities)

  • Provide overhead, and underground distribution line designs for both overhead and underground projects based on provided project criteria and applicable standards
  • Complete initial field surveys and data collection for line design project
  • Organizing and formatting project data collected in field for use one line design projects
  • Input material and labor estimates into client software
  • Prepare line design construction drawings using drafting software
  • Assist project engineers and other team members in preparing equipment, material, and construction specifications
  • Assist project engineers and other team members in preparing line design calculations and documentation
  • Assist with construction support and pole field staking
  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members
  • Regularly meet and correspond with design team, clients and other stakeholders
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills Needed to Win:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university required or designer candidates must have an Associate’s degree from an accredited program in Drafting and Design, Civil Engineering Technology or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience working on distribution line design projects required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground construction methods and distribution system equipment.
  • Strong understanding of distribution power flow.
  • Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Experience with various distribution design tools and computer programs (Microsoft products, AutoCAD and Bluebeam, PLS-CADD preferred).
  • Knowledge of the NESC rules and how they apply to distribution design.
  • Knowledge regarding easements, right-of-way, and permitting.

In addition to the above qualifications, we are looking for the following skills and qualifications:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work on multiple assignments and manage changing assignments in a team environment.
  • Ability to solve problems with minimum supervision from leaders or management.
  • Proactive, good communicator (oral and written), and needs strong analytical and problem-solving skills to trouble shoot and assess key issues to address.
  • Ability to collaborate, build relationships and work effectively with a team and key stakeholders to understand and deliver on client requests.
  • Successful completion of Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam or EIT certification. Desire to obtain a PE license preferred. Preference given for candidates who hold a current PE license.
  • Previous experience in consulting strongly preferred.

At BHMG, our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered. Roles are eligible for additional rewards including annual incentive payments based on individual and company performance.
