This is skilled firefighting work involving the protection of life and property through fire fighting and rescue operations and emergency medical work utilizing the policies, procedures and treatment protocols of the Medical Director. Work may be performed under the supervision of a Paramedic but may require individual and team action of all medical requirements exclusive of those Paramedic duties as defined.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Firefighting duties may include but are not limited to those of operating and making both efficient and effective use of all apparatus and equipment; assisting in firefighting, rescue, and all other emergencies as well as fire prevention activities, inspection, training and other related duties as directed.
· Performs skills in all aspects of fire fighting, fire prevention, fire prevention education, inspections of buildings, hydrants and all other related duties such as extrication, confined space rescue, water rescue and hazardous materials response.
· Routine station duties and care and maintenance of department property and equipment including minor mechanical repair and maintenance of all equipment.
Min. Education, Licenses and Certifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
· Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
· Possession of an Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology or Emergency Medical Services Technology or equivalent is preferred.
Licenses and/or Certificates:
· Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida drivers license (Class E minimum)
· State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
· Current American Heart Association BLS provider, Course C;
· Florida State Firefighter certification
· DOH approved certification as a Paramedic, State of Florida, within four (4) years of employment with credentialing (successful testing for Paramedic privileges) with the Charlotte County Fire/EMS Medical Director.
· E.V.O.C. certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
· Must be at least 18 years of age.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· A thorough knowledge and practical ability to perform the duties and medical practices as detailed in the EMT curriculum and the standards as set forth by the State of Florida.
· Thorough knowledge of emergency medical practices, procedures, techniques and protocols.
· Thorough understanding of the methods and principles of fire fighting, fire prevention, rescue and first aid techniques.
· Knowledge of all standards as set forth by the State of Florida in Florida Statutes, Chapter 401, and Florida Administrative Code 64J-1 relative to function.
· Knowledge of all Firefighter duty standards as set forth by N.F.P.A. 1001.
· Ability to make sound judgments concerning the proper use of emergency medical aid.
· Ability to effectively communicate with people and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
· Must be a non-smoking person if hired on or after October 1, 1988.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions: Very frequent exposure to changes in temperature and humidity.
Risk/Safety Conditions: Frequently around moving equipment, exposure to dust, gases and fumes, slippery surfaces, irregular surfaces, and moving objects. Occasional exposure to excessive noise levels.
Physical Activities: Frequent heavy lifting of over 50 pounds. Constant standing. Very frequent speaking and hearing, and detailed inspection/reading/editing. Frequent walking, sitting and bending/stooping. Occasional writing, reaching over head, kneeling and crawling. Will frequently monitor/operate fire apparatus such as engine, ladder, brush and staff vehicle.
