The department of OHSC & Environmental Compliance has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Health Safety Environmental Officer to work at UHealth. Responsible for overseeing management of the Physical Environment program, in order to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and personnel. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring safety programs and initiatives for the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics (UMHC). Managing the Environment of Care (EC) Safety and Life Safety Plans in order to minimize hazards and reduce risk of injury to patients, visitors, third party vendors and employees is a major responsibility of this position. Incumbent serves as a designated Safety Officer and participates as an active member of the UHealth Environment of Care committee. This position is also responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring various Management programs and initiatives for the UHealth System related to the management of the environmental operations (air, water and hazardous waste) in order to minimize hazards and reduce risk of injury to patients, visitors, employees and the environment. Implements initiatives into the functional operation of the facility by implementing systems, processes, and procedures to prevent spills, accidental discharges of waste, air violations of the law or UHealth policies, and minimize the environmental impact of our operations, while working to supervise the guard force and conduct investigations. This position is directly responsible for all compliance activities as associated with the CMS conditions of participation and Joint Commission standards as outlined within the Life Safety, Environment of Care standards across the entire UHealth System (UMHC & UMMG).
- Identifying solutions to specific environmental challenges.
- Planning and executing special environmental projects at the request of the AVP and Executive Director of Occ. Health, Safety & Compliance.
- Plans, directs, and manages the Environmental Protection (EP) programs.
- Manages the Environmental Compliance and Continuity Team providing personnel administration including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and as required, implementing corrective action.
- Assists in the enforcement of interim life safety plans and infection control risk assessments.
- Oversees all on-site inspections, assisting inspectors and surveyors in the performance of their duties; provides reports as required in follow-up to surveys, inspections and audits.
- Ensures issues chosen by the Environment of Care Quality Improvement Committee are monitored and that the results are reported back to that committee.
- Actively participates in safety management of the Environment of Care Committee; Works with other managers to ensure that the objectives, scope, performance, and effectiveness of each of the EC management plans are evaluated at least annually based on analysis of incident reports and other information.
- Demonstrates knowledge of building and construction activities with additional expertise in the area of fire protection devices, building materials, exit design, wall ratings, lighting, and occupant capacity and combustible material storage.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for OSHA compliance to all areas of the organization and assists all departments in complying with the fire safety standards.
- Oversees the implementation of federal, state, and local regulatory-driven permits, reports, fees, and licensing which are covered under, required (state- and county-) hazardous materials business plans, medical waste registration, hazardous waste generator fees, EPA treatment permit and fees, storm and sanitary sewer discharge management program reports, underground storage tank licensing program, and air pollution source permit reporting and management.
- Conducts water sampling. Helps ensure compliance at multiple construction sites at campus locations.
- Oversees all aspects of proper hazardous waste management which includes processes for labs and other campus entities to properly collect, hold, and request pick-up. In addition, processes for the hazardous materials management staff to pick-up, sort, label, consolidate, store, pack, ship, and track unwanted hazardous waste.
- Other waste streams managed include: medical waste and controlled substances.
- Monitors, controls, evaluates and continually improves procedures in accordance with existing, updated and pending regulations.
- Provides reports to Federal, State, and local agencies. Directs audits, follow-up and notification activities.
- Maintains professional knowledge/expertise of existing and proposed changes in OHSC areas, with specific attention to regulations in particular subject area(s).
- Creates new and complex solutions applying advanced level knowledge/expertise of best practices within multiple technical, professional, scientific, and applied disciplines and makes recommendations and presentations based on accepted scientific methodology.

Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in relevant field such Safety, Occupational Health, Fire Science or Environmental Science is required.
- Certification in relevant specialty or field required
- Minimum 4 years of relevant experience required
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: - Possessing fire investigation certification
- Having fire safety training
- Obtaining fire prevention, education or inspection experience
- Demonstrating fire alarm testing and maintenance experience
- Showing knowledge of relevant codes and regulations
