Virginia Beach Human Services is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with Mental Health Nursing experience to join our Assertive Community Treatment Program (ACT) . In this role, you will work with adults experiencing substance use disorder (SUD), serious mental illness (SMI), and co-occurring conditions, contributing to their recovery and well-being.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical and clinical services to Behavioral Health adult clients including psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, ensuring appropriate treatment adjustments as needed.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests and EKGs for screening and diagnosis, referring clients to specialized medical and clinical services when necessary.
  • Prepare medical justification and documentation for clients to obtain prescribed medication, assist in applying for patient assistance programs, and manage prescriptions in accordance with financial status.
  • Manage a patient caseload, providing necessary documentation for medical direction and supervision, including chart reviews and outcome assessments as required by the Virginia Board of Nursing and Board of Medicine.
  • Conduct Tardive Dyskinesia screening as appropriate and provide health maintenance counseling, health promotion, illness prevention, and medication management education to clients.
  • Travel to and perform duties at several department locations within the City as needed.
  • Provide consultation and training to nursing, clinical, and administrative staff, collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.

**Hiring bonuses shall only be for new hires of original employment or reemployment as defined in Human Resources Policy No. 5.0.

  • $4,000 will be awarded in the first paycheck.
  • $4,000 will be awarded upon completing the six (6) month interim performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.
  • $4,000 will be awarded upon completing the employee’s one (1) year probationary period and a performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires a Masters Degree in a nursing related field and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing. Possession of a valid license as a nurse practitioner; certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; a nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority issued by the State of Virginia and possessing a DEA number within 90 days of being in position. Must have a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

Experience working with adults with substance use disorders.

Experience providing consultation and training to nursing, clinical and administrative staff.
